Our neighborhood, San Giacomo de l'Orio, is putting on family-oriented Carnevale activities in the campo. Yesterday, a group of puppeteers, the Compagnia “Ghe gera na volta”,(Once upon a time) who perform in Venetian dialect, put on "L'isola che no ghe xe" (the island that isn't). We joined the crowd to watch. The charmingly-painted three-level puppet theater depicts the Venetian lagoon. Various parts open and close. On stage right now are a giant fish and two cats (one was a dragon transformed by a witch into a cat) saying "Maoo" (meow). I didn't draw the witch in time. After the show ended, we drank some vin brule' and ate fritelle.
The six sestieri of Venice each represent one of the Senses in this year's Carnevale. Our sestiere, Santa Croce, is Olfatto/Smell, and there is a giant portable nose that a man in costume is wheeling around. I attended a cooking demonstration (cooking with liquid nitrogen) yesterday in Cannaregio (Gusto/Taste).
