Yesterday and this morning I attended the international study conference, Celebrazione e autocritica: La Serenissima e la ricerca dell'identita' veneziana nel tardo Cinquecento. Yesterday's sessions were held at the very elegant Palazzo Barbarigo della Terrazza, home of the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani. Geesepalace gave one of the talks, very well done and very well received. At yesterday's morning session I sat at the back of the room (so as not to distract anyone listening) and drew while a scholar from the UK gave a talk titled Lepanto: Music, Liturgy and Memorialization. The Battle of Lepanto was won on the day of the Feast of Santa Giustina, 1571, so he showed several slides of Santa Giustina, who was subsequently raised to greater importance as a saint in the Venetian pantheon.
