December 24...a pretty mild day...I sat on the terrace and drew the two iron serpents of the pergola. The left-hand drawing is more accurate than the right...spirals are hard. I took the measurements afterwards, and am going to try to study the proportions of these creatures. I added the conversation this evening.

I love this! The serpents are such good characters - and the dialog is a charming touch.

I found your site from the Notebookism blog. I love your drawings. This one is my favorite.

Thank you very much.

I had heard that snakes discouraged pigeons from roosting, so before we built the pergola I put some rubber snakes on the ledge. They didn't do much good. But I told the blacksmith making the pergola that I wanted serpents as supports and this is what he came up with.

I am fascinated to see how my blog is being found. I am quite new to this but am getting some lovely feedback from around the world.

Did you make your journal yourself?

My notebooks are made for me by the Legatoria Polliero, Campo dei Frari, Venezia. This is a small, family-run artisanal bindery. The father and son print the cover papers with old woodblocks. They only make a small number of sketchbooks like mine with handmade Amatruda paper (carta Amatruda).
