I went to Washington, DC on January 21, the day after Barack Obama's inauguration, on a work-related trip. Walking to the Library of Congress, I was able to see the US Capitol from the enclosure where all the ticket holders' chairs were set up. The Capitol was still all decorated for the ceremony, and the clear winter day and sharp light illuminated it beautifully. After I was done looking at a copy of Max Ernst's collage novel, Une Semaine de Bonte' at the library, I walked back down the hill to the west side of the Capitol and made this drawing. The Capitol was now pink and yellow with the late afternoon sun. It was about 19 degrees F. so I was wearing gloves while I drew. People were milling around, posing for photos, happy to be standing in this historic place. I was happy for beginning of the Obama presidency, happy to be in Washington on a beautiful day, and very happy to be drawing again.
